PG&E completes 25 miles of underground power lines along California's I-5
Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) has completed the undergrounding of 25 miles of power lines in the Lebec area of California. This project targets a high-risk stretch along Interstate 5 to mitigate wildfire threats.
The company estimates that burying these lines will reduce wildfire risks associated with its equipment by approximately 98% in this specific corridor. The initiative is also designed to decrease the frequency of public safety power shutoffs, which are often implemented during extreme weather to prevent utility-related ignitions but can cause significant disruptions to homes and businesses.
The new equipment is expected to enter service by September following the completion of final technical steps.
