PG&E expands V2X program for electric vehicles in California

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) has expanded its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program in California, allowing a wider range of electric vehicle (EV) models to discharge power back to homes and the electrical grid.

Through V2X technology, EV owners can use their vehicle's large battery as a backup power source for household appliances or sell excess electricity back to the grid during peak demand periods. To support this transition, PG&E is offering up to $5,000 in installation assistance.

The expanded list of eligible vehicles includes the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Cadillac Celestiq, Cadillac Escalade IQ, previous generation Nissan Leaf, Volvo EX90, Polestar 3, Kia EV9, and Kia EV6. These join previously supported models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.

PG&E is collaborating with Bidirectional Energy to connect vehicles to home and grid systems, and with PowerFlex to scale the application of V2X technology across the state. Implementation requires specialized hardware rather than standard chargers to facilitate the bidirectional flow of electricity.
