PG&E warns of potential power shutoffs for 88,000 customers in California
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has warned approximately 88,000 customers across 29 California counties of potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) due to elevated wildfire risks. The utility is monitoring a dry offshore wind event, including Diablo winds, characterized by high speeds, low humidity, and warm temperatures, which is expected to persist from Wednesday through Saturday.
Potential outages affect various regions, including the North and East Bay, the Central Coast, and the Sierra foothills. Specific areas at risk include Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties. In Berkeley, the shutoffs could impact the Berkeley Hills and the UC Berkeley main campus. In the Central Valley, thousands of customers in Fresno, Madera, and Tulare counties may also be affected.
To support those impacted, PG&E is opening over 40 Community Resource Centers across 23 counties, providing amenities such as Wi-Fi, device charging, water, and snacks. Residents are advised to prepare for outages by charging backup batteries and storing emergency supplies.
