Indonesia targets 100 GW of renewable energy to cut subsidies

Indonesia is pursuing an ambitious energy transition strategy, targeting 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of renewable energy capacity within three years. President Prabowo Subianto has launched strategic solar power projects to achieve this goal, aiming to increase installed solar capacity from the current 1.5 GWp.

Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia stated that completing these 100 GWp solar plants could save the state up to Rp73 trillion (approximately US$4 billion) in electricity subsidies. The initial phase involves developing 14 solar power plants across West Java, East Java, Bangka Belitung, and the Riau Islands.

The Masyarakat Energi Terbarukan Indonesia (METI) has expressed readiness to support this directive, emphasizing the need to convert Indonesia’s vast natural potential in solar, wind, geothermal, and mini-hydro into operational power plants to ensure national energy security.
