Phalaenopsis orchid care: Tips for blooming and root health

Maintaining healthy Phalaenopsis orchids requires careful management of light, temperature, and moisture. A common issue is the plant's failure to produce new flower spikes, which is often caused by inadequate light or improper temperature regulation rather than a lack of nutrients.

To encourage blooming, plants should be placed in bright, indirect sunlight, such as near an east-facing window, while avoiding harsh midday sun. A slight reduction in nighttime temperatures to approximately 16–18 °C can also trigger new flower growth. However, plants must be protected from drafts and sudden temperature shocks, and should not be placed directly next to radiators.

Proper watering is essential to prevent root rot. Instead of following a strict schedule, owners should monitor the roots through transparent pots. Watering should occur when the substrate feels dry and the roots turn a silvery color. It is critical to ensure all excess water drains completely and that the plant is never left sitting in water. Additionally, using a well-aerated substrate, such as bark-based media, is necessary for healthy root development.
