Phan Thị Tuyết of Hà Tĩnh honors husband Đoàn Tuân, a war martyr, after 50 years

Phan Thị Tuyết, now 74, has spent more than half a century alone at her home in Thịnh Lộc village, Lộc Hà commune, Hà Tĩnh province, keeping a shrine to her husband Đoàn Tuân, a young soldier who was killed in the final days of the Vietnam War in April 1975. After a brief marriage of four months and a short period of wartime correspondence, he died just three days before the country’s reunification, leaving her with a promise to "wait for him".

Since then, Tuyết has tended her farm, raised her husband’s memory, and participates in local commemorations. She describes recent visits from village women’s groups and youth as a source of comfort, noting that the communal meal and house cleaning bring warmth to her life. Her story was documented during the July “Remembrance of Heroes” period, highlighting her enduring devotion and the personal legacy of the war.
