Phantasialand implements new drainage systems to prevent lime deposits

Phantasialand, a major theme park located in Brühl near Cologne, has completed a renovation of its Berliner Treppe to address aesthetic and structural issues. The staircase, which connects the Berlin, Mexico, and Deep in Africa themed areas, previously suffered from significant white lime deposits on its concrete steps following a prior renovation.

Technical experts from Gutjahr identified that the combination of composite waterproofing and laying mortar, lacking sufficient drainage, allowed water to penetrate the structure. This process dissolved calcium components from the cement-based materials, which then surfaced and remained as visible deposits after evaporation. To resolve this, the park installed Gutjahr AquaDrain SD step drainage and AquaDrain EK surface drainage to ensure long-term durability and appearance for the high-traffic area, which serves approximately two million annual visitors.
