Two Hellenic Air Force pilots, Major Ioannis Blesias, 40, and Captain Dimitrios Petrou, 37, were killed when their F-4E Phantom II aircraft crashed during the Athens Flying Week airshow at Tanagra airbase on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 14:55 while the aircraft was performing a low-altitude maneuver.

The crash caused a fire at a nearby agricultural machinery factory and in a forested area. Emergency services, including 85 firefighters and multiple aircraft, were deployed to control the flames. No spectators or civilians were reported injured in the accident.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias declared three days of national mourning for the armed forces. An official investigation by the Air Accident Investigation Committee is underway, examining technical data, wreckage, and cockpit communications to determine if the cause was a technical failure, environmental factors, or pilot error. Preliminary reports suggest the pilots may not have activated the ejection system before impact.
