Phantom hacker scams exploit tech support and bank alerts

Phantom hacker scams, sophisticated frauds designed to trick victims into transferring savings to criminal-controlled accounts, have seen a significant rise. These schemes often leverage advancements in artificial intelligence, social media, and online banking to create multiple points of exploitation.

The scams typically follow a multi-stage process. It often begins with fake tech support alerts via pop-ups, texts, or calls claiming a device is infected with a virus. Once the victim engages, scammers may request remote-access software to control the device.

This is frequently followed by fake bank alerts where criminals spoof legitimate caller IDs to claim accounts are being compromised. While the victim attempts to secure their funds, the scammers use their remote access to steal login credentials. In some variations, criminals impersonate government or law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI or Federal Reserve, to pressure victims into moving money into supposedly “safe” accounts, cryptocurrency, or gold.
