German medical advances: improved GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs and promising glioma vaccine

Pharmaceutical companies are developing next‑generation GLP‑1 medications aimed at reducing injection frequency and side‑effects. Pfizer plans to test a monthly‑injectable GLP‑1 drug in more than 20 studies, while Amgen is exploring a formulation that could require only four to six injections per year. "Das Gewicht allein zu senken, ist der Anfang. Die Qualität des Gewichtsverlusts ist wichtig," said James List, Pfizer’s Chief Internal Medicine Officer.

In parallel, researchers from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the University Hospital Mannheim and the University Hospital Heidelberg reported long‑term results of a peptide vaccine targeting the IDH1 mutation in high‑grade gliomas. In a study of 33 patients, eight years after vaccination, 66 % were still alive and 42 % showed no disease progression. "Unsere Studie zeigt, dass eine gezielte Impfstrategie gegen eine Tumormutation langfristige Überlebensvorteile bei Hirntumoren bringen könnte," said Michael Platten, director of the neurological clinic at Mannheim.

Both initiatives reflect a broader effort in Germany to improve treatments for chronic diseases and cancer, potentially offering more convenient therapy options and extending survival for patients.
