Pharma industry adopts green chemistry to drive sustainable growth

The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly integrating green and sustainable chemistry into its manufacturing processes and supply chains to drive long-term value and competitiveness. Industry leaders are shifting sustainability from a peripheral compliance function to a core business strategy focused on risk management, operational resilience, and brand reputation.

To support this transition, the Green ChemisTree Foundation (GCF) will host the 5th Conference & Exhibition on ‘Advancing Implementation of Green & Sustainable Chemistry in the Pharma Supply Chain’ from October 27–29, 2026, in Hyderabad, India. The event will address themes such as green chemistry tools for process research, plant safety, and environmental sustainability management.

The push for greener practices is driven by the sector's significant environmental footprint. Research indicates that the pharmaceutical sector’s direct emissions intensity is approximately 60 per cent higher than healthcare services. As the global pharma market is projected to exceed $2.8 trillion by 2033, and India’s sector is expected to surpass $130 billion by 2030, companies are prioritizing responsible manufacturing to manage growth alongside environmental impact.
