Pharmaceutical R&D investment in Italy rises 54% in five years

Pharmaceutical companies in Italy invested 2.5 billion euros in research and development in 2025, representing 8% of total national investments. This figure marks a 54% increase over the last five years, according to data released by Farmindustria president Marcello Cattani.

The pharmaceutical sector leads all industrial sectors in innovation investment per employee, a rate three times the national average. Research areas include drugs, vaccines, plasma derivatives, orphan drugs, and advanced therapies. Additionally, companies invest approximately 800 million euros annually in clinical studies, which provides patients with access to innovative therapies and resources for the National Health Service.
