Pharmaceutical Society of Australia launches pharmacy practice reviews

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) has launched a national consultation to review and update its Clinical Governance Principles for Pharmacy Services and its Dispensing Practice Guidelines. The initiative aims to ensure these frameworks remain contemporary and reflect the evolving scope of pharmacy practice to maintain patient safety and high-quality care.

PSA National President Professor Mark Naunton stated that the review is essential for supporting safe, consistent, and person-centred care as pharmacists' roles expand. The Dispensing Practice Guidelines, originally published in 2019, will be updated to reflect modern professional standards and advances in the field.

The review process is supported by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and the Minister for Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, under a Strategic Agreement on Pharmacists’ Professional Practice. Pharmacists are encouraged to provide feedback via surveys or virtual consultations between 13 August and 10 September. A draft of the revised dispensing guidelines is expected to be released for further consultation in 2027.
