Pharmacist highlights key vitamins for winter health

Pharmacist Dennis Ouko from Phlo Clinic and dietitian Hazel Shore have identified four types of supplements that may be relevant during the winter months. They note that individual needs depend on diet, lifestyle, and existing deficiencies.

Key recommendations include:

Vitamin C: Supports immune function and iron absorption. While found in citrus, peppers, and broccoli, supplementation may be considered.

Vitamin B12: Essential for red blood cell formation and nervous system function. Those consuming little to no animal products may face higher risks of deficiency.

Vitamin D: Crucial for bones, teeth, and muscles. Because sunlight is insufficient during winter in certain regions, health authorities often recommend daily supplements from October to April.

Multivitamins: These may be useful for individuals who struggle to meet all nutritional requirements through diet alone.
