Pharmacists Play Key Role in Early Detection of Alopecia Areata

The Council General of Official College of Pharmacists (CGCOF) released a report on International Alopecia Day (August 1) highlighting how community pharmacists can identify alopecia areata early and guide patients on treatment. The report notes that roughly one in 50 people will develop the chronic autoimmune condition, which can cause sudden, unpredictable hair loss and carries a significant psychological burden, with higher rates of depression and anxiety than the general population.

Pharmacists are positioned to be the first health professional consulted for unusual hair loss, enabling prompt referral to physicians, counseling on commonly used therapies, ensuring drug adherence, and helping patients access emotional‑support resources. The CGCOF calculated the average first‑year cost of the disease in Spain at €821 per patient (2014‑2021). The report calls for pharmacists to be familiar with the disease’s clinical signs to improve prognosis through early intervention.
