Pharmacists warn Nigerians against indiscriminate use of painkillers

Pharmacists in Nigeria are warning against the indiscriminate use of painkillers for every ache or discomfort. Experts note that many pains, particularly acute pain resulting from strenuous physical activity, may resolve with rest and non-drug measures.

Chioma Omattah, Co-founder and CEO of Welnex Pharmacy in Lagos, emphasized that while some pain is temporary, sudden, unexplained, or persistent pain—especially shooting or radiating sensations—could indicate an underlying medical condition that requires professional evaluation.

Health professionals cautioned that frequent or irrational self-medication with analgesics can lead to serious complications involving the liver, kidneys, and stomach. Additionally, exceeding recommended doses increases the risk of toxicity. These warnings follow observations of widespread self-medication practices across the country.
