Pharmasaga initiates Phase II clinical trials for PS1 diabetes drug

Pharmasaga has announced the advancement of its innovative small-molecule drug, PS1, into Phase II clinical trials. Following the successful completion of Phase I, the company plans to conduct trials for both Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D) diabetes across the United States, China, Australia, and Taiwan.

PS1 targets PDIA4 and functions as an oral medication designed to maintain functional islet cells and protect remaining beta cells. This mechanism aims to potentially modify or reverse the progression of diabetes, addressing a significant unmet medical need. Current treatments primarily focus on blood sugar control and complication delay, whereas PS1 focuses on islet cell preservation.

Pharmasaga intends to submit Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in early October 2026. The Phase II trials for T2D will evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of different dosages to achieve proof of concept, while the T1D trials will focus on maintaining endogenous insulin secretion by protecting beta cells from immune-driven damage.
