Phayao flooding submerges roads and threatens historic temple
Severe rainstorms in Phayao province have caused significant flash flooding, overwhelming local drainage systems and impacting major transportation routes. On Phahonyothin Road, water levels reached over one meter in certain areas, particularly between the Pratu Lek intersection and Phayao Hospital, making it impassable for small vehicles.
The historic Wat Sri Khom Kham faced an immediate threat as floodwaters rushed toward its entrance. Buddhist monks and novices responded by constructing emergency sandbag barriers to protect the temple grounds and the sacred Grand Main Vihara, successfully preventing water from damaging the central hall and its artifacts.
Continuous heavy rainfall remains a concern for the region, with officials warning that further downpours could lead to prolonged flooding in residential and community areas.
