PhD students in Tetouan protest university registration fees
PhD students at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences in Tetouan have threatened escalated protests against the faculty administration and Abdelmalek Essaâdi University. The dispute centers on the refusal to accept re-registration files for doctoral students and a demand for students to pay fees totaling up to 30,000 dirhams to settle their academic status for the past two academic years.
The student coordination group claims that despite completing electronic registration, the administration refused to accept their physical files. Some students even sought judicial officers to document the administration's refusal to receive their paperwork. During a dialogue session involving university officials, including the Vice President of the University and the Dean, students were reportedly asked to submit letters of appeal accompanied by proof of the 30,000 dirham payment.
The students reject this requirement, arguing that the fees lack a legal basis and that their status as researchers is already established through official communications, such as invitations to training sessions and assignments to supervise exams. The coordination group has warned that the ongoing conflict risks wasting academic time and disrupting research progress, and they intend to continue legal and protest actions.
