Phidarian Mathis suspended three games by NFL

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis has been suspended for the first three games of the NFL season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Mathis, a 6-foot-4, 312-pound lineman, had been performing strongly during training camp and was noted by defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard for his athleticism and power. Although the suspension affects his eligibility for the regular season, Mathis is permitted to participate in preseason games. He will not be eligible to return to regular-season action until September 28.
