Phil Haines announces amputation of wife Helen Haines' second leg
Phil Haines delivered a press conference at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital to provide a health update regarding his wife, MP Helen Haines. During the address, Haines announced that his wife’s second leg has been amputated.
Flanked by Governor-General Sam Mostyn, Haines spoke on behalf of his family, noting that he was stepping in to provide the update as Helen is typically the one addressing the media. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Haines for his “remarkable” address, describing his conduct as showing extraordinary “resilience and strength” and bravery.
Phil and Helen Haines have been married for nearly 40 years. The couple met in Melbourne's North Carlton suburb while Helen was studying nursing and midwifery and Phil was working as an agricultural scientist.
