Jaylen Brown traded to 76ers in blockbuster Celtics deal

The Boston Celtics sent 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for veteran forward Paul George, two first‑round picks and two second‑round picks. The trade, completed on July 6, ends the decade‑long partnership between Brown and Jayson Tatum, leaving Tatum as the Celtics’ undisputed leader while George is expected to provide a secondary star role.

Philadelphia adds Brown to a roster built around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, positioning the Sixers as a title contender. Former NBA star Tracy McGrady noted that Brown has not yet spoken with Embiid, calling the silence “not a good sign,” though the team’s front office says Embiid is enthusiastic about the move. The Celtics, who previously explored trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves and other teams, now look to rebuild with the acquired draft assets.

Celtics star Jayson Tatum acknowledged the emotional difficulty of losing his longtime teammate, describing the situation as “weird” but emphasizing the need to move forward. Both franchises face scrutiny as they adjust to the new roster configurations ahead of the 2026‑27 season.
