Philadelphia activists demand moratorium on AI data centers
Activists in Philadelphia are calling for a three-year moratorium on the construction of hyperscale data centers. The No Data Centers in Philly coalition recently rallied at City Hall to voice concerns regarding the rapid growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure and its potential impact on local communities.
While hyperscale data centers can provide economic boosts, opponents argue they place significant strain on the energy grid, water supplies, and the local environment. Residents, including organizers from the environmental justice group Philly Thrive, have expressed fears that these facilities could mirror the negative health and environmental legacies of previous heavy industries, such as oil refineries.
Although no formal proposals for hyperscale facilities have been submitted for the identified potential sites—one near Northeast Philadelphia Airport and another in the Grays Ferry neighborhood—city officials have noted these locations as possible candidates for future development.
