Philadelphia City Council passes resolution to combat rat infestations
The Philadelphia City Council has unanimously approved a resolution to address severe rat infestations in the Lower Northeast section of the city. The measure, known as Resolution 260819, urges the Departments of Public Health, Licenses and Inspections, and Sanitation to coordinate their efforts to manage the rodent population and mitigate the conditions that attract them.
Residents in neighborhoods such as Mayfair, Oxford Circle, and Castor Gardens have reported significant issues, including rats invading homes, contaminating food, and damaging property. Some residents noted damage to vehicle wiring and building materials. Officials identified poorly stored trash, neglected properties, and abandoned vehicles as primary factors contributing to the infestation.
The resolution seeks a unified response to prevent residents from having to contact multiple agencies for a single neighborhood issue. While the resolution calls for inter-departmental cooperation, specific details regarding the implementation of this coordinated strategy have not yet been finalized.
