Philadelphia cycling advocates target decline in youth participation
As the Philadelphia Cycling Classic returns to the city, cycling advocates are working to reverse a long-term decline in youth bicycle participation. Data from the National Sporting Goods Association shows that regular youth bicycling participation dropped from over 20 million riders in the 1990s to approximately 10.9 million in 2023, with fewer than 5% of children riding bikes frequently.
Potential factors contributing to this decline include increased screen time, traffic safety concerns, and the rise of e-bikes. Additionally, the cost of bicycles and safety equipment remains a significant barrier for families in under-resourced neighborhoods.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL) is working to mitigate these hurdles by providing bikes, helmets, coaching, and park access. The organization aims to connect youth with local programs and competitive teams to foster renewed interest in the sport.
