Philadelphia Gas Works CEO faces scrutiny over undisclosed Phillies trips

Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) CEO Seth Shapiro has faced scrutiny regarding undisclosed hospitality gifts. Public filings reveal that the Phillies provided Shapiro with trips to spring training in Clearwater, Florida, from 2022 to 2025. During this period, the utility spent over $1 million on advertisements with the MLB team.

Shapiro’s financial interest statements previously lacked required details regarding the value of these hospitality gifts. While Pennsylvania state ethics law requires public employees to disclose the cost and provider of gifts exceeding $650, Shapiro only amended his 2025 filing to include these values after being notified of the omissions. His amended filings also noted a trip valued at $4,200 paid for by the pipeline company Enbridge.
