Philadelphia homicide rate drops 24% as police boost community outreach

Philadelphia homicide decline National Night Out Kevin Bethel community policing

In 2026 Philadelphia recorded 102 homicides, a 24% decline from the 135 reported at the same point in 2025. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel credited community policing and the city’s National Night Out events for the improvement, noting that the Shooting Investigations Group has solved 40% of shootings and nearly 100% of homicides this year. Overall violent crime also fell by more than 4%.

City officials highlighted the National Night Out celebrations held at schools and neighborhoods, where residents, police officers, Pennsylvania State Troopers, Mayor Cherelle Parker and Governor Josh Shapiro participated. The events featured bike rides, giveaways and information tables on health, education and workforce services, aiming to strengthen trust between law‑enforcement and the community.
