Bill Giles, longtime Philadelphia Phillies icon, dies at 92
Bill Giles, a longtime Philadelphia Phillies executive, owner, and former honorary president of the National League, has died at the age of 92. He passed away at his home in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania.
Giles joined the Phillies in 1969 and rose through the ranks to become executive vice president. In 1981, he organized the group that purchased the franchise from the Carpenter family. He served as the team's president and CEO until 1997, later becoming chairman, and eventually chairman emeritus in 2015.
His leadership was central to several major milestones for the franchise, including the 1980 and 2008 World Series championships. He was also instrumental in the development of Veterans Stadium and Citizens Bank Park, and is credited with helping to create the Phillie Phanatic mascot. Additionally, he played a key role in bringing broadcaster Harry Kalas to Philadelphia and persuading the team to sign Pete Rose.
In recognition of his contributions to baseball, Giles received the Bud Selig Executive Leadership Award in 2010. Following his death, the Phillies held a moment of silence during their game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
