Philadelphia Phillies warn Trea Turner regarding shortstop position

Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has issued a warning to shortstop Trea Turner regarding his defensive performance. Following a 2026 season in which Turner recorded a league-worst 21 errors and a .242 batting average, Dombrowski stated that Turner must improve his fielding to remain at the position for the 2027 season.

Turner, who has seven years remaining on a $300 million contract, met with Dombrowski to discuss his future at the plate and in the field. While Turner is expected to start the upcoming season at shortstop, Dombrowski emphasized that a position change could be necessary if defensive improvements are not made.

In related organizational news, the Phillies have appointed former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as the new infield coach and infield coordinator. Additionally, the team has re-signed left-handed reliever Tim Mayza.
