Philadelphia Phillies expected to hire Alex Cora as next manager
Alex Cora is reportedly expected to become the next manager of the Philadelphia Phillies following the 2026 season. This potential move would reunite Cora with Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, with whom he previously won a World Series while managing the Boston Red Sox in 2018.
Currently, Don Mattingly serves as the Phillies' interim manager after the dismissal of Rob Thomson in April. While Mattingly has led the team to a strong record and back into the National League playoff race, reports suggest he faces an extremely high standard to retain his position. Unless Mattingly guides the team to at least a World Series appearance or a championship, the organization is expected to move forward with Cora.
Cora had previously declined an offer to take the role in April after being dismissed by the Red Sox, stating a desire to spend time with his family. The Phillies' current success under Mattingly has placed the team in a competitive position for a Wild Card spot, but the looming managerial decision adds complexity to the end of their season.
