Philadelphia Phillies sign Don Mattingly to two-year managerial deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Don Mattingly to a two-year contract to serve as the team’s permanent manager for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.

Mattingly, 65, previously served as the team’s bench coach before being promoted to interim manager in late April following the dismissal of Rob Thomson. Under Mattingly’s leadership, the Phillies improved from a 9-19 start to a 79-55 record, ultimately securing a National League wild-card spot. Despite the successful turnaround, the team was eliminated in the NL Wild Card Series by the Atlanta Braves.

The decision to retain Mattingly follows unsuccessful attempts by the organization to secure former Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who reportedly declined the position on two separate occasions. Mattingly’s new deal provides stability for a roster featuring players such as Bryce Harper and Trea Turner as the team seeks its first World Series title since 2008.
