Philadelphia police investigate cargo theft linked to burning vehicle

Philadelphia police are investigating a series of cargo thefts, including a recent incident where five pallets of frozen beef, valued at approximately $10,000, were stolen from a tractor-trailer in the Wissinoming neighborhood. The theft occurred around 4 a.m. on Thursday when suspects allegedly cut the vehicle's rear padlock while the driver was sleeping.

Following the theft, emergency crews responded to a burning Dodge Journey near the Aramingo Avenue exit on Interstate 95. Firefighters discovered piles of smoking meat inside the vehicle that matched the packaging of the stolen Upper Iowa Beef products. Additional boxes of beef were reportedly found thrown over the highway and onto nearby train tracks.

Authorities believe this may be part of a pattern of cargo thefts in the city. Recent incidents include the theft of 3,000 pounds of crab legs in Southwest Philadelphia and a previous beef theft valued at over $40,000. Police are searching for a dark gray Nissan sedan and two dark-colored SUVs believed to be involved. Investigators are urging trucking companies to use hardened steel locks and park in well-lit, public areas.
