Philadelphia police report 268 wheel thefts tied to up to five organized groups

Philadelphia police have recorded 268 wheel and tire thefts so far in 2026. Investigators say three to five distinct groups, each consisting of two to three individuals, are responsible. The thieves focus on Honda Civics, Accords and CRVs and operate mainly in Northern Liberties, Center City North, Old City and South Philadelphia.

The typical method involves driving a stolen vehicle up beside the target, breaking into the car to obtain the wheel‑lock key, and removing all four wheels within minutes – one documented case took about seven minutes. Surveillance footage captured the entire theft.

Police are increasing patrols in high‑risk areas, monitoring tire sales, junkyards and online marketplaces, and have seen a modest decline compared with the previous year. They advise owners to use wheel locks, tilt‑sensor alarms, park close to a curb and in well‑lit locations. Victim Judiyah Baxter, a nursing student, described the theft of her Honda Accord as a severe inconvenience and a feeling of violation.
