The School District of Philadelphia has announced early dismissals for 52 schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, due to forecasted high temperatures and inadequate cooling systems in those buildings.

In addition to the student dismissal, early childhood programs at the affected locations will follow the early schedule, and all in-person after-school activities for the day are canceled. The district advised students to wear lightweight clothing and stay hydrated.

Oz Hill, the district's deputy superintendent of operations, noted that while progress has been made in cooling facilities, some buildings still lack proper systems. Approximately one-quarter of the district's buildings do not have the electrical capacity required for full cooling. The number of schools lacking proper HVAC systems has been reduced from 118 to 52 through the use of COVID relief funds and a donation from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.
