Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo receives two-year doping ban
Kenyan long-distance runner Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo has accepted a two-year suspension from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) following an anti-doping rule violation. The ban, effective from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2028, also includes the disqualification of his competitive results from July 19, 2026.
The violation occurred after an out-of-competition urine sample collected in Mwaita, Kenya, tested positive for chlortalidone, a diuretic and masking agent prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Kimaiyo attributed the presence of the substance to taking his wife's blood pressure medication to treat pain after training, though he could not identify the specific name of the medication.
Because the AIU found no evidence that the violation was intentional and noted this was Kimaiyo's first offense, the sanction was set at two years. Prior to the ban, the 27-year-old was a prominent figure in international road running, holding personal bests of 58:11 in the half marathon and 2:04:01 in the marathon.
