Philipp Nimmermann appointed to Deutsche Bundesbank Executive Board

Philipp Nimmermann has been appointed to the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank, becoming the first member from the Green Party to hold a position on the board. The Bundesrat voted for the 60-year-old economist to succeed Burkhard Balz, who left the central bank at the end of August.

Nimmermann is a PhD economist with extensive political and private sector experience. He previously served as a State Secretary in three different ministries, most recently at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action under Robert Habeck from 2023 to 2025. His prior roles included working in the Hessian Ministry of Economics to promote the Frankfurt financial center and serving in the Ministry of Finance in Schleswig-Holstein.

Before entering politics, Nimmermann spent 15 years at BHF Bank in Frankfurt, where he rose to the position of Chief Economist. The Bundesbank's six-member board will determine Nimmermann's specific areas of responsibility once he begins his eight-year term in Frankfurt.
