Philippe Coutinho joins Santos FC on free transfer

Brazilian club Santos FC has announced the signing of midfielder Philippe Coutinho on a free transfer. The 34-year-old, a former Liverpool and Barcelona player, has signed a deal that runs until the end of 2026.

Coutinho had been without a club since February after leaving Vasco da Gama due to mental fatigue. During his unveiling, Coutinho credited his long-time friend and former Brazil teammate Neymar for playing a crucial role in his decision to join the club. He noted that while he initially declined Neymar’s earlier invitations to play together due to his mental state, a recent message from Neymar prompted him to reconsider and return to professional football.

Coutinho joins a squad that includes other high-profile players such as Arthur Melo and Everton Cebolinha. Santos is currently competing in the Brazilian league and is working toward qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana semifinals.
