Global legal updates: Gabon detention extension and major drug seizure in Algeria

Various legal developments are occurring across Africa and Europe. In Gabon, a judge has ordered the extension of former Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze’s preventive detention for an additional six months at the Libreville central prison. His legal team has appealed the decision, criticizing the judge for citing a lack of time to complete procedural acts despite the defendant not being interviewed during his initial six months of incarceration.

In Algeria, three individuals have been placed in provisional detention following a major drug seizure involving over 80 kg of cocaine, a firearm, and ammunition. The investigation, conducted by the DGSI in Tamanrasset, identified a criminal group of 23 individuals, though 20 remain at large.

In France, several criminal cases are proceeding through the courts. In Talence, a 33-year-old man faces trial in March 2027 after allegedly threatening to decapitate an elementary school teacher. In Lyon, a man is appearing in court regarding an incident where a woman was sprayed with biological fluid using a syringe, with the victim seeking to reclassify the charge as sexual assault. Additionally, a man known as the ‘Gourou du Médoc’ is on trial in Toulouse facing accusations of rape and illegal medical practice, while another individual in Algrange was sentenced following an incident involving armed threats against teenagers.
