Philippine cities tighten waste management and disposal rules

Local governments in the Philippines are taking steps to address waste management and garbage disposal violations.

Tuguegarao City Mayor Maila Ting-Que has issued a warning to residents regarding strict compliance with the city’s garbage collection schedule. Collection is set for Mondays and Thursdays between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The mayor noted that repeated noncompliance has caused accumulation issues and stated that while the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) would perform a one-time cleanup, unscheduled collection requests will no longer be accommodated. Additionally, the city intends to coordinate with the PNP Cybercrime Division regarding a social media page using the city government’s logo without authorization.

In Cebu City, Councilor Winston C. Pepito has proposed an amendment to the city’s garbage ordinance to increase penalties for violators. The measure seeks to update fines that have remained unchanged for over 30 years. Under the proposal, first-time offenders could face fines between ₱2,500 and ₱3,500 or community service. Subsequent offenses would carry higher fines and potential imprisonment ranging from one month to one year. The proposal also includes provisions for the suspension or revocation of business permits for repeat offenders.
