Batanes maritime standoff: Philippine Coast Guard drives away Chinese research vessel
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) conducted operations to drive away the Chinese research vessel Jia Hai Ke 7 from the waters off Batanes on October 1, 2026. The vessel was detected approximately 69 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). To disrupt the vessel's activities, the PCG deployed the BRP Teresa Magbanua and an Islander aircraft, using a rigid-hull inflatable boat to circle the Chinese ship.
Philippine officials expressed concern that the vessel was conducting unauthorized marine scientific research and potentially gathering sensitive data near critical undersea communication cables in the Luzon Strait. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) formally rejected China's claims of sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the area, noting that no consent had been granted for such research under international law.
The situation escalated when a China Coast Guard vessel arrived to support the Jia Hai Ke 7. While Beijing maintains the vessel was conducting normal operations in Chinese-claimed waters, the Philippines maintains the area is part of its maritime domain. Additionally, reports indicated that Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels were observed in the vicinity of the Luzon Strait during the monitoring of the Chinese vessel.
