Philippine leaders call for nationwide flood management overhaul
Philippine leaders are calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's flood management and disaster intervention strategies. Senator Francis Pangilinan has advocated for a long-term, science-based national flood management plan that prioritizes prevention over emergency response.
Pangilinan emphasized the need for transparency regarding flood control funds, suggesting that the public should be informed of project locations, costs, contractors, and implementation status to address corruption concerns. He noted that without a coordinated plan, massive spending will not prevent recurring flooding.
Vice President Sara Duterte also addressed the issue, stating that flood mitigation must be a nationwide priority rather than focusing on specific regions like Davao City. She highlighted that low-lying areas in Ilocos, Pampanga, and Bulacan face similar existential threats to lives and livelihoods, urging the executive branch to ensure equitable safeguarding of all provinces.
