Philippine police boost community tips to curb illegal gambling
The Philippine National Police (PNP) is expanding its community‑intelligence programme, urging residents to provide tips that help locate hidden illegal gambling operations across the country. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the strategy targets both Metro Manila and far‑flung municipalities, with officers being trained to work closely with local communities.
In July, the PNP reported 9,401 arrests and the seizure of more than PHP 3.2 million in bet money and gambling equipment. The force highlighted that illegal gambling often fuels other crimes such as domestic violence, theft and robbery, and that dismantling these networks is intended to improve peace and order in neighborhoods.
