Philippine Senate divided over 2026 BSKE postponement

The Philippine Senate is divided over a proposal to postpone the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). Senate Deputy Majority Leader Joseph Victor Ejercito reported that an informal survey shows a nearly even split among senators, though those favoring postponement currently hold a slight advantage.

While the House of Representatives has shown support for the postponement, the measure's success depends on consensus between both chambers. Some lawmakers have proposed moving the elections to 2028 to redirect funds toward other national priorities. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed support for studying legislative measures to improve government efficiency and generate savings through such delays.

Former Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon suggested the postponement might be driven by a desire for political control, potentially allowing barangay officials to assist in upcoming presidential and senatorial campaigns. The BSKE is currently scheduled for November 2, 2026.
