Philippines accelerates infrastructure spending and economic zone expansion

The Philippine government is implementing strategies to accelerate infrastructure development and expand economic opportunities through specialized zones. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is working to remove procurement and implementation bottlenecks to speed up government spending, particularly for infrastructure projects. DBM Acting Secretary Kim Robert de Leon emphasized that this push for faster execution will not involve relaxing auditing or budgeting safeguards.

Simultaneously, the administration is expanding its network of economic zones to drive regional development. There are now 46 proclaimed ecozones, with a strategic focus on locations outside Metro Manila to encourage investment in the countryside. This expansion is projected to attract over P140 billion in investments and create approximately 189,000 jobs. Recent proclamations have specifically targeted areas in Cavite, Batangas, and Negros Oriental to strengthen local economies and provide employment opportunities closer to workers' hometowns.
