Philippines and China clash over maritime charts and research activities
Tensions between the Philippines and China have escalated following several maritime incidents in disputed waters. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that the Chinese research vessel JIA HAI KE 7 was detected operating approximately 37 nautical miles northwest of Itbayat, Batanes. Manila stated the vessel was conducting unauthorized marine scientific research within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) without consent, a violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In a separate development, China has rejected a newly updated Philippine maritime chart released by the Philippine National Maritime Council on September 25. The chart covers features in the Kalayaan Island Group, including Pag-asa Island and Lawak Island. Beijing characterized the chart as “illegal and invalid,” claiming it undermines Chinese sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and surrounding waters.
Additionally, the Philippine Coast Guard has reported various confrontations, including driving away Chinese maritime militia vessels and fishing boats near Kota Island, as well as accusations of Chinese vessels spoofing their locations in northern waters.
