Philippines Acquires BrahMos Missiles, Calls for Peaceful South China Sea Resolution

The Philippines has become the first export customer for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, signing a $375 million deal with India for three shore‑based anti‑ship batteries. Ambassador Josel F. Ignacio said the acquisition provides credible deterrence and an anti‑access/area‑denial capability that raises the cost of any potential aggression in the West Philippine Sea.

Ignacio also urged a peaceful settlement of the South China Sea dispute, noting that the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling already clarified maritime entitlements under UNCLOS, leaving only sovereignty questions to be resolved with China. He called on all parties to respect the ruling, exercise restraint and adhere to international law.

The statements underscore Manila’s growing defence partnership with New Delhi and its emphasis on diplomatic solutions to regional tensions.
