Philippines Admiral Tarriela Defends West Philippine Sea Transparency Over Senator Padilla Dispute
Philippine Coast Guard Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela rejected Senator Robin Padilla’s claim that the government’s West Philippine Sea transparency initiative amounts to “wartime propaganda.” Tarriela said the effort simply documents Chinese aggression and harassment of Filipino fishermen and Coast Guard vessels, especially after a China Daily AI‑generated video depicted Filipinos as monkeys.
Padilla accused Tarriela of “drawing first blood” and escalating propaganda, arguing that the caricature of Chinese President Xi Jinping used by the Coast Guard was demeaning. Tarriela responded that such remarks insult the more than 26 million Filipinos who voted for Padilla, emphasizing that the issue is not about white supremacists but about the Chinese government’s own mockery.
Both officials exchanged a series of Facebook posts, with Tarriela urging senators to demand an apology from Beijing rather than criticize the Coast Guard’s transparency measures.
