Philippines agricultural sector sees mixed commodity prices and sugar industry shifts
The Philippine agricultural sector is experiencing varied price trends and structural shifts. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, retail prices for well-milled rice rose 18.7 percent year-on-year to PHP 56.07 per kilogram, while cabbage prices surged 43.7 percent over a six-week period. Conversely, fresh pork prices saw a 9.6 percent annual decline.
In the sugar industry, farmers are seeking a minimum millgate price of PHP 2,600 per 50-kg bag as the new milling season begins. Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona noted that declining sugar inventories could strengthen the bargaining position of producers. Simultaneously, industry stakeholders are lobbying for tax reforms under the ProGRESS Bill, proposing higher levies on beverages using artificial sweeteners to protect the domestic cane sugar market.
To address industry vulnerabilities, the SRA and the Department of Agriculture are proposing a National Task Force. This body would coordinate responses to pest infestations, such as the red-striped soft scale insect, and natural disasters, including significant rainfall declines in major producing regions like Negros.
