Philippines and Australia strengthen cybersecurity cooperation

The Philippines and Australia held the second Philippines-Australia Cyber Dialogue in Manila to strengthen cooperation against evolving digital threats. The meeting focused on protecting critical undersea networks, which are essential for regional connectivity, trade, and economic resilience.

Delegates identified the need to develop a skilled, future-ready cybersecurity workforce to address significant vulnerabilities. In the Philippines, recent data indicates a rise in cyber threats, including millions of compromised account credentials, phishing attacks, and ransomware incidents. Furthermore, industry surveys suggest that a lack of cybersecurity skills is a primary cause of breaches for many organizations.

The dialogue serves as a standing platform under a February 2024 Memorandum of Understanding to discuss shared concerns regarding cyber and critical technology. Both nations committed to enhancing collaboration through bilateral programs and within regional and multilateral forums to support a secure and resilient cyberspace.
