Philippines and Pakistan see surge in rooftop solar adoption

Millions of households and businesses in the Philippines and Pakistan are increasingly adopting rooftop solar technology to mitigate rising electricity costs and energy supply concerns. The surge in domestic solar installations has positioned these two nations as leading destinations for Chinese-manufactured solar panels, which account for approximately 80% of global production.

In the Philippines, interest in solar power has been driven by economic considerations and anxieties regarding potential fuel shortages and power disruptions linked to Middle East conflicts. In Pakistan, the transition toward solar energy accelerated following the Russia-Ukraine war, which caused higher energy costs and disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.
